Brand storytelling on video: what it is, examples and how to tell your story

Updated October 21, 2026

Brand storytelling means telling what a brand does through stories with people, a conflict and a change, instead of listing benefits. It works especially well on video because you see a real person face something. The brand is not the hero: it is what helps the hero get there.

What storytelling is and why it works

Storytelling literally means telling stories. In marketing and communication, it is the technique of getting a message across through a story rather than through data or a list of benefits.

It works for a very simple reason: people remember stories and forget lists. If I tell you a company has a state-of-the-art lab, you forget it within a minute. If you watch the person who runs that lab describe the day an experiment finally worked, you remember. The information is the same; the way it reaches you is different.

A story has three basic pieces. Someone to identify with, the character. Something that makes their life harder, the conflict. And a change, the ending, in which something is different from the start. Without conflict there is no story, just a description. That is why so many corporate videos are boring: they describe the company but do not tell anything.

Brand storytelling applies this to a company's communication. It is not about making up tales, but about finding the real stories that already exist inside: why it was founded, what problem it solves, who it has helped, what it took to get here. Every company has these stories. The hard part is seeing them and knowing how to tell them.

Brand storytelling: the brand is not the hero

The most common mistake in brand storytelling is making the brand the main character. "We founded the company in 2010, we grew, we opened offices, we are leaders." It is a story, but nobody cares, because nobody identifies with a company.

What works is the opposite: the main character is the customer, the employee or the person with the problem. The brand appears as the one that helps them, the mentor, the tool or the ally. It is the structure of almost every film you remember: the hero is not the one who hands over the sword, it is the one who uses it.

This completely changes how you approach a video. Instead of asking what you want to say about your company, you ask what story your customer is living and at what point in that story you appear.

For a clothing brand, the story can be the person who wears it. For a technology company, the person who uses its technology or the person who builds it. For a law firm, the client who came in with a problem and left with a solution.

There is one case where the brand can be the main character: when it is the story of the people who make it. A founder explaining why they started, a team facing a challenge. But then the main character is a person again, not a logo.

The parts of a brand story on video

A storytelling video does not need to be long or expensive. It needs these parts, even in ninety seconds.

The opening. In the first few seconds it must be clear who the character is and why we should care. On social media, if it does not hook at the start, nobody sees the rest.

The conflict. What is at stake: a problem, a fear, a challenge, a hard decision. It is what makes you want to know how it ends. Without it, the video is a brochure.

The turning point. What the character does, with or without the brand's help, to solve it.

The result. What life looks like afterwards. Specific, not generic: "now we sleep at night because…" rather than "now we are better off".

And the image that stays. A shot, a line or a sound that sums up the story and that people remember.

Beyond structure, three video tools multiply the effect. The real person's voice, which carries truth. Cutaway shots, which show instead of tell. And music, which sets the pace and the emotion. On the Jaray fashion film, for example, we worked with Panorama Room Studio to create the original music from scratch, because the story was told as much through sound as through image.

Examples of brand storytelling on video

These are some types of storytelling video, with examples from our own work.

The story of the people who make it happen. For Qilimanjaro, a European quantum computing company based in Barcelona, we filmed a short documentary with its CEO, Marta Estarellas, explaining why the company exists, and a piece with Dídac, who runs its lab. The technology is very hard to explain; the people who make it are not.

A brand's world. In a fashion collection, storytelling is not always a story with a beginning and an end: sometimes it is a world. For Jaray, by NouVelleMaison, we travelled to Granada to shoot a fashion film after a long concept process, from visual narrative to sound. We explain it in what a fashion film is.

A character and an antagonist. For the Capinàs music video we built a full set in our studio and a puppet made from scratch to play the band's antagonist. The story was as simple as it was effective: someone to defeat.

A story told in chapters. The four music videos for Paula Valls's album Començar de Nou each have their own identity, but together they tell a change: an artist reinventing herself. We describe the process in how a music video is produced.

A customer's story. A well-told success story is pure storytelling: someone with a problem, a solution and a change. We explain it in how to film testimonials that feel authentic.

How to apply storytelling to your company or personal brand

You do not need to start with a big campaign. You can start with these questions, which we use when preparing any video.

Why does your company exist, beyond making money? If the answer is "because we saw a problem nobody was solving well", there is a story there.

What has been the hardest moment? Companies rarely tell it, and it is exactly what connects most. There is no need to dramatise; being honest is enough.

Which customer has changed most thanks to you? Their story sells better than any ad.

Who in your team has something to tell? Often the best story is someone who is not the boss: the technician who has been there twenty years, the salesperson who covers the whole region.

With those answers, the video almost writes itself. A company presentation video with storytelling does not list services: it explains why you provide them.

For a personal brand it works the same way. Your story is not your CV; it is the moment you decided to do what you do and what you have learned along the way. Told in short pieces and repeated consistently, it is what makes people remember you.

And one rule for everything: if a detail does not add to the story, it goes. Storytelling is also knowing what to leave out.

How we approach it at Bostak

At Bostak Films, storytelling is not a separate service: it is how we think about any piece, from an ad to a corporate video or a podcast. Before talking about cameras, we look for the story.

The process starts with a conversation, which is usually more of an interview than a meeting. We ask about the company, the customers and the people, and listen for where the conflict, the change and the emotion appear. From there we propose the story, the tone and the form: documentary, fiction, interview or a mix.

Then we produce it with the same team, from our studio in Viladecans and on location in Barcelona, the Baix Llobregat or wherever it is needed. Albert Murillo, who leads the creative side, comes from music videos and fiction, and that shows in how we build the pace and emotion of a company piece.

If you have a story and do not know how to tell it, or you think your company does not have one, it probably does. We are a creative agency in Viladecans working with brands across the Barcelona area and beyond. Book a free diagnosis and in half an hour we will tell you which story we would tell about your brand.

FAQ

What is brand storytelling and how do you do it on video?

It means telling what a brand does through stories with a character, a conflict and a change, instead of listing benefits. On video you do it by finding real stories from customers, staff or founders, using those people's voices, shots that show rather than tell, and music that carries the emotion.

What are the elements of storytelling?

A character to identify with, a conflict that complicates things, a turning point and a result that is different from the start. On video you add an opening that hooks in the first few seconds and a final image or line that people remember.

What is the difference between storytelling and advertising?

Traditional advertising talks about the product and its benefits. Storytelling tells a story in which the product or brand helps someone. They can go together: many of the best ads use storytelling, and what makes them memorable is the story, not the list of benefits.

What is corporate storytelling?

It is storytelling applied to a company: telling its origins, its challenges, its team and what changes for its customers. It is used in presentation videos, success stories, internal communication and employer branding. It works best when real people tell it, not a generic voiceover.

How long should a storytelling video be?

As long as the story needs and not a second more. For social media, between thirty seconds and a minute and a half. For a website or presentation, between one and three minutes. A short documentary can run several minutes if the story holds it up. The rule is to cut everything that adds nothing.

Can you do storytelling for a personal brand?

Yes, and it works very well. It is built on your real story: why you do what you do, what it cost you and what you have learned. Told in short pieces and consistently, on video or in a podcast, it makes people remember you and trust you before they ever speak to you.
