How to make a good podcast thumbnail for YouTube

Updated September 30, 2026

A good podcast thumbnail shows a face with a clear emotion, three or four words at most that add something to the title, and a design that reads on a phone. It does not summarise the episode: it raises the question that only watching answers. It is designed together with the title and tested with data.

Why the thumbnail matters so much for a podcast

On YouTube, before anyone hears a word of the episode, they have seen the thumbnail and the title. Those two things decide whether they click or keep scrolling. For a podcast they matter even more, because the video itself tends to look similar from one episode to the next: two or three people talking on the same set. What changes, and what makes one episode get far more views than another, is the promise the thumbnail makes. That is why using the same template with the guest's face and name on every episode is a mistake: it is tidy, but it does not spark curiosity.

What a working thumbnail has

Almost every podcast thumbnail that works shares three things. A large face with an emotion you read instantly: surprise, seriousness, laughter, concern. Very little text, three or four words that complete the title rather than repeat it. And a single idea, without five elements fighting for attention. Contrast helps a lot: the person should stand out from the background and the text should be legible on a small phone screen. If the episode revolves around something specific, such as an object, a number or a place, putting it in the image usually beats showing two people sitting down.

Title and thumbnail are planned together

The classic mistake is writing the title at the end, once the thumbnail is done, or the other way round. They work as a team: the title says what it is about and the thumbnail adds the emotion or the detail that makes people hesitate. If both say the same thing, space is wasted. So when planning each episode, pick the strongest moment of the conversation and build title and thumbnail around it. Sometimes that moment comes in the first minutes and sometimes after ninety; finding it is part of editing, just like choosing clips for social.

Test, measure and change

A thumbnail is not final. YouTube lets you test several versions on the same video and keep the one that gets watched most, and you can also swap it by hand if an episode starts slowly. Look at click-through rate together with retention: a thumbnail that attracts lots of clicks but promises something the episode does not deliver makes people leave early, and that hurts the channel. The rule is simple: spark curiosity without misleading. More on how this fits the channel strategy in how to grow a podcast on YouTube.

How we work on them at Bostak

At Bostak Films we design podcast thumbnails every week for shows in Spanish and English; with our partner Dull Light we make, among others, those for The Sage Steele Show. We work from frames of the episode itself or photos taken during recording, prepare several options per episode and think them through alongside the title. Thumbnails are part of our podcast production service, together with episode editing and clips. If your podcast has good conversations but few views, the thumbnail is one of the first places we look.

FAQ

How do you make a good thumbnail for a podcast episode on YouTube?

With a large face showing a clear emotion, three or four words that complete the title, a single idea and strong contrast so it reads on a phone. Design it with the title and test it with click-through and retention data.

What size should a YouTube thumbnail be?

Horizontal 16:9 at good resolution; YouTube's reference size is 1280 by 720 pixels. Most important is that it reads well at small sizes, on a phone.

Should every episode use the same template?

A recognisable visual line helps, but an identical template with the guest's face and name does not spark curiosity. Keep colours and type consistent and change the idea of each thumbnail.

Who designs podcast thumbnails in Europe?

Bostak Films, a production company near Barcelona, designs podcast thumbnails every week for shows in Spanish and English, alongside episode editing and social clips.
