How much a social media video or reel costs, and what the price depends on
Updated October 21, 2026
The price of a social media video depends on the work behind it: idea and script, whether there is a shoot and how long, how much editing, how many pieces come out of each shoot, and music, subtitles or versions. A one-off reel is expensive; producing in batches with a monthly plan lowers the cost per piece.
Why there is no single price for a social media video
It is one of the most searched questions, and one of the hardest to answer with a number. "A social media video" can be a fifteen-second clip cut from an interview that already exists, or a small ad with a script, actors, a location and motion graphics. Both end up as an Instagram reel, but the amount of work behind each one is completely different.
That is why you should be wary of fixed prices given without questions. A price set without knowing what you need is almost always either too high for what you wanted or too low for what you will get.
What is useful is not knowing how much a video costs, but understanding what the price depends on. With that you can compare quotes fairly, decide where to invest and where to save, and ask for exactly what you need.
We do not publish rates on our website: we give prices in each proposal, after understanding what the brand is looking for, because every project is different. What we can explain is how a social media video budget is built, part by part, and which decisions push it up or down. We did the same for corporate video in how much a corporate video costs.
What the price of a social media video depends on
These are the factors that weigh most, in the order they come up in a project.
The idea and the script. Do you arrive with a clear idea, or do you need someone to work out what to say? A video with a creative concept, script and strategy involves work before any camera is switched on. That work shows most in the result, and it is the part people most often try to save on.
The shoot. Does something need filming, or is existing footage used? If filming, for how many hours, in how many locations and with how many crew? One person with a camera for two hours is not the same as a crew with lighting, sound and direction for a full day.
The people on camera. If someone from your team appears, there is no extra cost. If you need actors, models or creators with an audience, there is, and their image rights need agreeing too.
The edit. A clip with one cut and subtitles is quick. A reel with worked pacing, graphics, sound effects and colour takes a good deal more.
The music. The libraries inside the platforms are free but limited. Music licensed for commercial use or composed to order has a cost. If in doubt, only use music with a clear commercial licence.
The versions. Every extra format, length and language is extra work. A vertical for Reels, a square for the feed and a horizontal for YouTube are not the same file.
And volume. This is the factor that changes the price per piece most, and it deserves its own section.
Why producing in batches lowers the cost per piece
The most expensive moment in a video is the shoot: moving a crew, setting up light and sound, organising the people on camera, preparing the space. That cost is almost the same whether you film one piece or ten.
That is why the most cost-effective way to produce social media content is in batches. One well-planned shoot day provides material for a whole month: several scripted pieces, clips from an interview, photos, assets for stories and shots that can be reused. The shoot cost is spread across all of them, and the price per piece drops a lot. We explain it in detail in how to get a month of content from a single shoot day.
The same goes for editing: an editor who works with your brand every month already knows your style, your typeface and your pace, and works faster and better than someone starting from scratch on every job.
For it to work, you need a plan. Knowing before the shoot which pieces you will publish during the month, in what order and with what goal. That is what we call a content plan, and we explain how to make one in how to make a social media content plan.
In practice, the question stops being "how much does a reel cost" and becomes "how much does my content for the month cost". That second question has a much more useful answer, and almost always a cheaper one per piece.
How much to charge for editing a social media video (if you are the editor)
Many searches on this topic come from the other side: people who edit videos and want to know what to charge. We are not going to give figures, but we can share the criteria we use when thinking about the price of an edit.
Charge for value and time, not per minute of video. A thirty-second reel with very worked pacing can take longer than a ten-minute video with few cuts.
Define what is included. Number of rounds of changes, subtitles, music, thumbnail, versions in other formats. Whatever is not written down will end up being free work.
Distinguish one-off jobs from recurring work. A client who sends you footage every week gives you stability, and it is reasonable for their price per piece to be lower than for a one-off job.
Consider your specialisation. Editing podcasts, ads or brand content requires different judgement. The more specialised, the more value.
And do not compete on price alone. People hiring an editor mainly want someone who delivers on time, understands their brand and does not make them repeat things. That is worth more than a low rate.
For the person hiring, read it the other way round: a very low price usually means fewer rounds, less care or less consistency. Always ask what is included.
What to ask for in a quote to avoid surprises
When you ask for a social media video quote, whether from an agency, a production company or a freelancer, make sure it answers these questions.
How many pieces and of what kind. Number of videos, approximate length, format and whether any has its own script.
What pre-production includes. Idea, script, shooting plan, casting if needed.
What the shoot involves. Hours or days, location, crew and equipment.
What the edit includes. Rounds of changes, subtitles, music, graphics, colour.
Which versions are delivered. Vertical, square and horizontal formats, and whether there are versions in other languages. We explain which format each platform needs in the right aspect ratio for each social network.
Who publishes. Whether the quote includes posting and managing the accounts or just delivering the files.
Rights. Whether you can use the pieces in paid advertising, for how long and in which countries, especially if actors or licensed music appear.
Timings. When the shoot happens and when each piece is delivered.
A quote that answers all of this lets you compare it fairly with others. If two quotes look very different, it is almost always because they include different things. We explain what a content agency does and when it pays off in what a content creation agency does.
How we quote at Bostak
At Bostak Films we do not give a price per reel. First we understand what the brand needs: what it wants to achieve on social media, how much it publishes, what material it has and what is missing. From that we propose a plan, usually monthly, with the pieces, the shoot and the editing, and we price that plan.
That is how we work, for example, with Santos Studio in Castelldefels, where we have produced more than a hundred and fifty pieces of content with monthly planning, regular shoots and ongoing editing. Or with Dr. Pizza, for whom we produced fifteen social media videos, sub-ten-second videos for delivery apps and more than sixty product photographs for the campaign with Glovo. In both cases, producing in batches is what made each piece worthwhile.
For companies that need video and photography on an ongoing basis we also have a fixed monthly plan with credits, where each piece uses a credit and unused ones roll over.
At Bostak, Albert Murillo's production company and agency, we create social media content for brands in Barcelona, the Baix Llobregat and across Spain. If you want to know what your content for the month would cost, with no commitment, book a free diagnosis and we will prepare a tailored proposal.
FAQ
How much does a social media video cost, and what does the price depend on?
It depends on the work behind it: whether there is an idea and script, whether a shoot is needed and for how long, how much editing, music and versions it involves, and how many pieces come out of each shoot. Producing in batches with a monthly plan lowers the cost per piece a lot compared with ordering one-off reels.
How much does an Instagram reel cost?
There is no single price. A reel cut from existing footage, with one edit and subtitles, is little work. One with a script, shoot, actors and graphics is much more. What lowers the price per reel most is filming several on the same day with a plan prepared beforehand.
How much should you charge for editing a social media video?
Charge for value and time, not per minute of video. Put in writing what is included: rounds of changes, subtitles, music, versions. Distinguish one-off jobs from recurring work and take your specialisation into account. Competing on price alone rarely pays.
Is it cheaper to film a month of content in one go?
Yes. The shoot is the most expensive part and costs almost the same whether you film one piece or ten. A well-planned day can provide content for a whole month, and the cost is spread across every piece. You need a content plan before filming.
What should a social media video quote include?
Number and type of pieces, pre-production, what the shoot involves, what the edit includes, versions and formats, whether posting is included, usage rights and timings. With all of that in writing you can compare quotes fairly and avoid surprises.
How much does it cost to promote a reel on Instagram?
It is a cost separate from production. You decide it in Meta's ads tool, based on the daily budget, duration and audience you choose. Make sure the piece is licensed for advertising use, especially if it includes music or people who are not on your team.
